The department offers the following programmes

PhD in Civil Engineering 

This program is designed to produce researchers, innovators, trainers and experts in the field of Civil Engineering for social and economic transformation of the society. The doctoral degree focuses on engineering infrastructure systems. Infrastructure encompasses a very broad range of functions, extending far beyond the traditional scope of public works. The creation of sound, interlinked, infrastructure systems, including transportation, water supply and treatment, structures play a vital role in economic growth.

The program shall normally take six (6) semesters for full-time mode of study and normally twelve (12) semesters for part-time mode of study. The programme will be offered on Open and Distance E-learning duration under this mode of study will be determined by MMUST Senate. The PhD in Civil engineering shall be done by research and thesis. The PhD in Civil engineering will be offered in any of the four options:

• Water Resources Engineering 

• Transportation &Highway Engineering

• Structural Engineering

• Geotechnical Engineering

Master of Science in Structural Engineering 

The Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering is designed to provide civil engineers with the technical knowledge and skills to develop the analytical, decision-making and critical powers required to solve Civil Engineering problems, along with the transferable skills to enable a leading career in Civil Engineering. Structural Engineers are involved in the design and supervision of construction of all kinds of structures such as houses, theatres, sports stadia, hospitals, bridges, oilrigs and office blocks. Every construction project is unique and will involve the expertise of a number of professional people including a structural engineer. The skills of a structural engineer include calculating loads and stresses, investigating the strength of the foundations and analyzing the behaviour of beams and columns in steel, concrete or other construction material to ensure that the structure has the required strength to perform its function safely, economically and with shape and appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. The program shall normally take a minimum of four (4) semesters for full-time mode of study and a maximum of eight (8) semesters for part-time mode of study.

In order to graduate, a student must successfully complete at least 50 units having 30 units of coursework and 20 units of thesis.

Master of Science in Water Resources Engineering 

Water Resources Engineering (WRE) is concerned with the analysis and design of water systems to control the quality, quantity, timing, and distribution of water to meet the need of human’s habitation and environment. Over the years, the water resources potential has been on the downward trend globally as the demand rises, while the pollution and contamination risk is on the increase. This has necessitated the development of new skills; technologies, policies and approaches for designing, analyzing and managing water resources potential, in the background of the environmental process which directly affects the water resources potential. This course targets water resources managers, engineers and policy makers for sustainable management of water resources.

The programme shall normally take four (4) semesters for full time mode of study and eight (8) semesters for part-time mode of study.

In order to graduate, a student must successfully complete at least 56 units having 36 units of coursework and 20 units of thesis.

Bachelor of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering 

The Bachelor of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering degree is covered in five academic years, each of which is divided in to two semesters. The students shall also undergo eight weeks of Fieldwork and Workshop Practice and two Industrial Attachments of at least eight weeks each.

The degree programme is designed to offer sound training in the following core areas of the discipline: Structural Engineering; Geotechnical and Materials Engineering; Public Health Engineering; Transportation Engineering; Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering; Construction Management and Engineering Surveying.

Diploma in Civil and structural Engineering 

The Diploma in Civil Engineering is aimed at training manpower that will fill the existing gap between Civil Engineers and Artisans in the field of Civil Engineering. During the programme of study, the student is exposed to various subjects of Civil Engineering such as Planning, Drafting (both manual and computer aided), Surveying, Estimation & Costing, Construction Technology, Basics of Highways, Railways, Bridges, Airports and Tunnels. The programme also offers adequate exposure to Reinforced Concrete Structures, Material Testing, Construction Management & Entrepreneurship, Professional Practice & Office Procedures. Students also get a feel of Extensive Survey, Building Drawings, Irrigation & Bridge Drawings and Structural Engineering Drawings. Students are also exposed to computer software in civil engineering.

The program shall normally take six academic semesters on full-time basis.
